Hi I’m Jane and I’m currently on a work placement with the Communities Team at Adur and Worthing Council. As part of my placement I have been asked to help with raising awareness of their I.T. Junction programme which aims to give everyone the chance to get online.
There are currently seven venues across Worthing and Adur all run by volunteers and as part of my placement I will be attending the three training sessions which all volunteers must complete before they are let loose on the public.
There are three sessions and yesterday I attended the first one (I also managed to convince my mum to tag along with me as a potential volunteer).
We started at 10am in a training room in Worthing. The sessions are run by the lovely tutors Helen and Kim who on arrival offered us a cup of tea or coffee (very welcome in this lovely weather we’re having at the moment) then ushered into the room with the promise of an unlimited supply of biscuits. There were twelve of us all together and I have to admit I was a little daunted at the prospect of spending 2 1/2 hours in the company of strangers but I really needn’t have worried.
Everyone had a different story of why they were there and as the session went on we all started to relax into each other’s company. Some people were retired but not ready to slow down too much, others had been off work for a while and wanted to update their skills in readiness for getting back to work (like me). There were others who just wanted to pass on the skills and knowledge they had picked up themselves.
The session involved various discussions on the daily running of the I.T. Junctions: paperwork, policies and general ‘housekeeping’. We also covered situations that may arise whilst volunteering at the centres and how to deal with them. These included different learning methods to help people learn and meet their goals, how to deal with difficult situations and the parameters of your role as a ‘digital champion’.
Helen and Kim made the session informative whilst keeping it enjoyable.
If this sounds like something you would like to do,then just call Kim or Tony on 01903 256233 and i will report back my 2nd session next week
have a great weekend Jane
